South County Park — Acquisition & Repairs

South Lewis County Park is an important community space located on the west bank of the Cowlitz River. Adjacent to Toledo’s historic core, the park features mature trees, river access, open green space, and Wallace Pond — a quiet natural area enjoyed by visitors for many years. GTHH is exploring the potential acquisition of the property through the county’s surplus process to prevent the loss of community access and to enable appropriate long-term care and improvements once ownership is clarified.

The park has the potential to become a cornerstone of cultural, recreational, and natural renewal in the region. As part of this early work, GTHH is reviewing general site conditions and preparing for the planning steps that would follow a successful acquisition. This includes identifying broad categories of repairs and upgrades that may be needed to ensure the park remains safe, functional, and welcoming.

Project Purpose

The goal of this initiative is to secure the park for continued community use and to establish a long-term stewardship plan that supports safety, accessibility, and responsible care. Acquisition would allow GTHH to pursue needed repairs and enhancements that cannot be undertaken while the property remains under county ownership.

Current Status

GTHH is currently in an early assessment phase, gathering general information that will guide future planning and prioritization. As part of this process, GTHH is preparing to engage appropriate specialists to help evaluate long-term options should the acquisition move forward.

General Areas of Potential Repair

Based on preliminary observations, several types of repairs or improvements may be appropriate after acquisition:

  • Basic Facility Repairs: Addressing wear and age in shelters, picnic areas, and small structures.
  • Safety & Accessibility: Improving pathways, public areas, and ADA access where feasible.
  • Park Amenities: Updating seating, signage, and other visitor-use features.
  • Environmental Care: Supporting healthy vegetation, maintaining the pond area, and addressing natural site needs.

As planning progresses, this page will be updated with assessment results, recommended actions, and opportunities for community involvement. Your interest and support help protect this important local space and ensure its long-term success.
